Yoga for Weight Loss?
100% Hardcore Truth
By Chris Walker  Fitness Professional

Ok, so you've been convinced to join a female yoga class and the instructor sold yoga as a weight loss  solution. Great! That is, if you want to tone and tighten those small muscles or perhaps you need to lose 10lbs or  20lbs  but if you want  to lose a significant amount of weight, I'm talking 50-100lbs plus. You might want to  consider a faster route.

Yoga defined

Traditionally yoga is one of the six schools of the Hindu philosophy, focusing on meditation and spirituality. Yoga  has since evolved and practiced for it's exercise benefits with little or nothing to do with spirituality. Research has proven that yoga is great for strengthening the lower back, core area and improving flexibility.

I've tried yoga

Now I've tried yoga and enjoyed it; downward dog, sun salutations it's a beautiful thing. Yoga definitely has  great virtues but come on I've seen really big females doing yoga and when I inquired if that was their only weight loss path the answer was, yep. Can you lose excessive weight with yoga....maybe in 5yrs. I don't care if you crank the room up to 100 degrees you're better off with some squats, push-ups and plyometrics to develop your major muscle groups transforming your body into a fat burning machine.

I'm not discouraging yoga participants

Don't get me wrong I'm not discouraging you from yoga, I'd rather you couple the discipline with a resistance program focused on compound movements. Of course we also need to add good nutrition and moderate aerobics to obtain a fitness result.

Conclusion

Yoga is a great exercise discipline with many benefits and lately has become very trendy with many different sectors. The dangers when things become to trendy or popular is people who are looking to profit tend to blanket the trend as a cure all, selling yoga as the miracle workout. Yoga is indeed great for flexibility, core strength as well as overall strength but I don't see it as a rapid fat loss solution.
